NSF/ANSI-61 establishes minimum health effects requirements for the chemical contaminants and impurities that are indirectly imparted to drinking water from products, components, and materials used in drinking water systems.

Before obtaining NSF certification, an impartial testing laboratory conducts an exhaustive evaluation of every aspect involved in the product's development. This evaluation covers a diverse set of tasks, including meticulous product testing, material analyses, and thorough inspections of manufacturing facilities. What's crucial to note is that the certification process is a continuous dedication, involving regular on-site audits of raw materials, manufacturing plants, and ongoing product surveillance, all aimed at ensuring a persistent adherence to the stringent standards required to maintain the certification over an extended duration.

Sloan has the most extensive line of NSF-61 certified commercial sensor faucets in the market for safe drinking water.

The California Assembly Bill 100 prohibits a person from manufacturing, and offering for sale in the state, an endpoint device, as defined, that does not meet a certain lead leaching standard. The bill requires products to be third-party certified and would require the consumer-facing product packaging or product labeling of an endpoint device to bear specified lettering if the endpoint device meets that lead leaching standard.

Effective Jan. 1, 2023, a person is prohibited from manufacturing, and offering for sale in the state, an endpoint device that leaches more than one microgram (1µg) of lead per NSF/ANSI/CAN 61-2020.

Products can still be sold in the State of California that exceed one microgram (1µg) of lead per NSF/ANSI/CAN 61-2020 until July 1, 2023. After this date, a person is prohibited from introducing into commerce or offering for sale in the state an endpoint device that does not meet that lead leaching standard.

What does this mean for Sloan faucets? All Sloan faucets meet or exceed this requirement.

California AB 100 defines an “endpoint device” as a single device, such as a plumbing fitting, fixture, or faucet, that is typically installed within the last one liter of the water distribution system of a building. The California law specifically clarifies what is and isn’t an endpoint devise. An endpoint device includes all of the following:

• Remote chillers
• Lavatory faucets
• Bar faucets
• Kitchen faucets
• Hot and cold-water dispensers
• Drinking fountains
• Drinking fountain bubblers
• Water coolers
• Glass fillers
• Residential refrigerator ice makers

What does this mean for Sloan faucets? Commercial, non-kitchen sensor faucets are not intended for drinking water per the NSF definition and are exempt from being considered an “endpoint device.” The exemption excerpted from NSF-61 2022 and this is the reference in the California Law (AB 100): 9.1.2 Endpoint devices specifically exempted from the coverage of this standard are: all endpoint devices that are not specifically intended to dispense water for human consumption, for example:

• utility, laundry, laboratory, bidet, and shampoo faucets;
• faucets with a hose thread spout end or with a quick disconnect end;
• faucets that are self-closing or metering;
• electronically activated nonkitchen faucets; or
• hand wash stations.

All Sloan faucets meet or exceed this requirement.

No, the lawmakers recognized and acknowledged that sensor faucets installed in commercial (public) restrooms are not specifically intended to dispense water for human consumption and therefore electronically activated (non-kitchen) faucets are specifically exempted from both California AB 100 and NSF 61 2021.

Even though it is not required, Sloan went above the requirements of the standard and bill mentioned and certified many of our faucets to NSF 61 for safe drinking water.
